From a word list to a worksheet
Start with a theme or enter an answer and clue on each line. For a garden puzzle, try TREE: A tall plant with a trunk, LEAF: A flat green plant part, and FLOWER: A colorful part visited by bees. Paste each pair on its own line.
The preview updates after a short pause. Generate updates it immediately; Regenerate tries the next repeatable arrangement. Choose a larger grid ceiling if words do not fit, or try another of the six repeatable arrangements. Turn on the word bank to make the same puzzle easier. The Answer key tab reveals the letters; every download includes both the blank puzzle and its key.
Check the total PDF page count above the preview. Short presets usually have two pages; longer clues or lists continue on additional sheets at a readable size. Print on matching Letter or A4 paper in portrait at actual size (100%).
Crossword questions
Which answer characters work?
Use Latin letters, including accents, spaces, hyphens, and apostrophes. “Café” becomes CAFE and “Ice Cream” becomes ICECREAM in the grid, while the optional word bank keeps the original label. Answers need at least two letters and must fit the chosen grid ceiling. Unsupported characters show an error.
How are missing clues and duplicates handled?
A missing clue becomes “A word with N letters.” The first colon separates the answer from its clue; later colons stay in the clue. A spaced dash also works. Repeated normalized answers are combined, preserving one readable label. Conflicting duplicate clues show an error so you can choose which one to keep. Up to 50 unique answers are accepted without truncation.
Why might answers remain unplaced?
Every answer must fit one connected crossword without conflicting letters or stray adjacent words. The maker has a fixed work budget and reports unplaced answers instead of dropping them. A 50-word list is not guaranteed to fit 21 × 21. Use shared letters, fewer or shorter words, a larger ceiling, or another arrangement.
Which settings change the grid?
The normalized answer set, grid ceiling, and arrangement determine the grid. Title, clue text, paper size, word bank, and answer-key preview do not change its letters or numbering. Each arrangement has a different seed, though a very constrained list can still produce the same layout.
Can I edit a theme?
Yes. Editing the words switches to Custom without clearing them. Selecting Custom keeps your list. Replacing manually edited words, clues, or title with another theme requires confirmation. Other settings stay the same.
Does Print include browser headers or footers?
Print opens the generated worksheet PDF. When printing the web page directly, browser-added headers and footers are controlled by the print dialog, not by worksheet CSS.
